They are just warming themselves with the winter sun, watching the ferries pass by, dreaming about the promised land across the sea and hoping that this night will be the lucky one when they manage to hide in a truck and slip past police control.

Ahmed in the Athens courthouse. Most of window are broken and there is no electricity and no running water and no toilets. More than 500 people are living here and it smells really bad. He is going to his room, on a higher floor where the smell is less bad and there are fewer rats he feels safer. He just wants decent life and job.

Early morning on Petrou Ralli street, Athens, and there are thousands of them, waiting all night. They know their chance of being allowed to apply for a refugee permit -- a red card -- are small, but many of them are coming here every Friday evening, spending the night out in the open even if is it cold, or there is rain or wind. Sometimes they come for months and they know there is almost no chance to get their papers, but hope dies last.
